Iman Deschatres
She doesn’t just understand tax rules – she designs tax products with precision, partnering with the best people in the field.
After years spent on tax reform, VAT and private equity, she realised something fundamental: no existing tool connected policy, product, and people. She worked hands - on with tax specialists at the country level. She engaged with policymakers and tax authorities worldwide. She saw how every decision shaped real business flows - far beyond balance sheets.
“I’m a professional who kept asking why it is so complex, and when I couldn’t find the answer, I decided to build tools to bring simplicity.”
Iman has always created products out of real-world problems:
✱ VATlib (2013) – a VAT calendar app built to manage obligations across the EU. Profitable for years, phased out by 2021.
✱ Taxamo Assure (2016) – co-founded with John McCarthy, shifting VAT liability for e-commerce sellers just as global digital tax rules were emerging. Her vision and product design shaped the Taxamo product up to its acquisition by Vertex.
✱ Deptax (2024) – born 15 days after leaving her job and deciding to stop doing tax, while on a flight. Designed not behind a desk, but by observing how platforms sell and where the friction lies.
“You don’t create great tax products behind a computer. You create them when you move, observe, and listen to how people actually sell. Everything starts from the sale and the customer journey.”
